Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Friday asserted that the party would return to power in 2028, with K Chandrashekhar Rao reclaiming the Chief Minister’s position.

He criticised the Congress government for halting the progress achieved over the last decade. He reiterated that the people of Telangana would soon recognise Congress’ failures and restore Chandrashekhar Rao’s governance in 2028.

He was addressing municipal chairpersons and councillors from different urban local bodies, whose tenure expired on Friday and were felicitated by the party at Telangana Bhavan here.

Rama Rao said while several countries have struggled with urbanisation, Telangana successfully transformed its cities into model urban centres under K Chandrashekhar Rao’s leadership.

“City expansion alone does not ensure development. It requires comprehensive planning, administrative reforms, continuous monitoring and steady financial support. For 10 years, we worked with this approach and presented development reports to the people,” he said.

Taking a dig at the condition of municipalities before Telangana formation, he recalled how urban areas were once synonymous with corruption and stagnation.

“Earlier, municipalities were like cesspools. People used to say ‘baldiya mane khaya piya chaldiya’ (municipalities were just about looting and leaving). But after BRS took charge, a new vision was implemented, turning Telangana’s towns into economic engines. Over the past decade, municipal chairpersons and councillors have played a key role in this transformation, winning numerous national awards,” he said.

He urged outgoing municipal chairpersons and councillors to stay engaged with people, predicting that they would be re-elected based on their contributions.

He also credited the BRS government for large-scale administrative decentralisation, including the creation of new districts, municipalities and corporations, which brought governance closer to citizens.

The BRS working president charged the Congress government of stalling urban development, leading to a decline in property values.

Instead of building new infrastructure, he said the Congress government was demolishing existing properties of the poor under the pretext of initiatives such as HYDRAA and Musi River Rejuvenation Project, he said.

Targeting Congress Ministers, he slammed their failure to pay salaries to municipal staff in towns like Nalgonda. He also ridiculed Congress’ governance, calling their electoral promises fraudulent.

“They came to power with 420 guarantees, but don’t even know how to govern. They claimed that money would rain into the bank accounts of farmers, but the only place it’s falling is in Delhi,” he quipped.
