Hyderabad: Surgeons from Gandhi Hospital saved the life of a 41-year-old woman, Jaheda Begum, who was admitted with a tumour in the kidney that had dangerously spread to other parts of the body, including the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC), the largest vein in the human body.
Tumour spreading to the IVC, also known as tumour thrombus, represents an advanced and extremely dangerous stage of cancer, doctors said. A team of surgeons, along with senior surgical gastroenterologist from OGH, Dr Ch Madhusudhan, took up a series of complex surgeries.
The surgeons conducted a right radical nephrectomy involving complete removal of the cancer-affected right kidney and performed IVC thrombectomy from inside the main vein. Later, the surgeons also carried out IVC repair, which involved restoration and reconstruction of the primary blood vessel.
Dr G Ravichander, Head, Urology, Gandhi Hospital, lauded the contribution of Dr Ch Madhusudhan, who came to Gandhi Hospital specifically to provide his expertise. His contribution was pivotal to the success of the surgery, Dr Ravichander said.
Dr Ravichander also highlighted the support provided by the CTVS (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery) and Anaesthesia departments.
