Hyderabad: In a major embarrassment for the Congress, the party’s Jubilee Hills by-election candidate Naveen Yadav’s father, Chinna Srisailam Yadav, a known rowdy sheeter, was among those bound over by the city police on Monday. Naveen Yadav’s uncle too was among the rowdy sheeters bound over the same day.
The development has come as a fresh setback to the Congress, which is already facing criticism for fielding a candidate from a family with a criminal background. Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had earlier criticised the Congress for insulting Hyderabad’s electorate by fielding a candidate “hailing from a rowdy sheeter family in Jubilee Hills”. He had said the Congress was testing the intelligence of Hyderabad’s people by fielding such candidates.
Meanwhile, the police action on Monday, taken as part of preventive measures ahead of the November 11 bypoll, has further fuelled political controversy in the high-profile constituency.
According to officials, 74 known rowdy sheeters were bound over under Borabanda police limits, while 19 others, including Naveen Yadav’s uncle Ramesh Yadav, were bound over under Madhuranagar police limits. The orders followed Election Commission directives to keep a strict watch on individuals with criminal or rowdy records during the campaign period.
Earlier, reports had surfaced that several rowdy sheeters had actively participated in Naveen Yadav’s nomination rally, drawing sharp criticism from rival parties.
Chinna Srisailam Yadav was once a key local strongman and Congress organiser in the Jubilee Hills area. His son’s candidature has reignited the debate over the Congress party’s choice of candidates and its commitment to clean politics.
Police, however, clarified that the action was purely preventive and aimed at ensuring a peaceful election.
