Hyderabad: Groundwater levels in the State registered a significant rise, thanks to the copious rains this season. Till August 31 this water year, Telangana received 734 mm rainfall as against 593 mm normal rainfall. This is 24 per cent excess rainfall recorded during the period as compared to normal annual rainfall, according to Ground Water Department (GWD).
It said the average groundwater level in the State during August-2021 was 5.63 metres below ground level (m bgl) and it varies from 2.64 m bgl (Jagtial) to 12.52 m bgl (Medak). Of the 33 districts, 18 districts average water level is less than 5 m bgl, in 13 districts between 5 to10 m bgl and the remaining two districts it is more than 10 m bgl.
The GWD said there was a net rise of 0.72 m in groundwater level during August-2021 as compared to August-2020, registering an increase of 11 per cent in 18 districts. A minimum rise of 0.13 m is observed in Mulugu district and a maximum rise of 6.38 m in Sangareddy district.
This apart, a net average rise of 3.56 m in groundwater level is recorded during August-2021 as compared to May-2021. The GWD monitored water levels during August-2021 through 1,063 Piezometers (monitoring stations) covering all mandals across the State.
As many as 21 districts received excess rainfall ranging from 21 per cent to 83 per cent and the remaining 12 districts received normal rainfall varying from 6 per cent to 19 per cent. When compared with the decadal average of August (2011-2020) levels recorded in 592 mandals, the water levels during August-2021 there is a rise in the range of 0.01-14.09 m in 572 mandals (97 per cent) and fall in the range 0.02- 2.86 m in 20 mandals (three per cent).
