Hyderabad: With the amount of Rs 12.9 crore from Mahesh Urban Cooperative Bank transferred to 129 bank accounts across the country, the police are in a quandary on how to identify and nab the account holders.
Last week, e-fraudsters had managed to hack the server of the bank and transferred the amount from three accounts to different bank accounts of individuals staying across the country.
The preliminary inquiry by the police into details of a few accounts revealed the accounts were maintained by some common persons leading to the suspicion that ‘money mules’ might have convinced the account holders to open the bank account and supply details to them in return for small sums.
“The agents lure common people to open the bank accounts and collect ATM cards from them, for this they pay around Rs 15,000. Afterwards, the agents keep it with them and supply only the details to fraudsters who use it to collect money from victims of e-frauds, for a commission they withdraw the money that gets credited into the accounts and pay the fraudsters,” said an official of Hyderabad Cybercrime crime.
The police are now trying to zero in on the main suspects who had hacked the accounts with the help of IP addresses to track down their locations and addresses. The police during the investigation found that the fraudsters are well versed with the hacking concept and might have been previously involved in such cases. The IT wing of the city police is assisting the cybercrime crime in investigating the case.
