Adilabad: Cotton farmers staged a protest against the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for causing hardship by imposing restrictions on procurement and held a sit-in on NH 44 at Neradigonda mandal headquarters on Saturday.
The farmers alleged that the CCI was refusing to procure cotton citing high moisture content and was purchasing only 7 quintals per acre, as against 12 quintals bought in the past. They regretted that their pleas for relaxation in moisture norms were being ignored despite the recent untimely rains that had affected crop quality.
The growers demanded that the corporation lift the restrictions and restore the earlier limit of 12 quintals per acre. Their protest brought traffic to a halt on the busy stretch, prompting the police to rush to the spot. The police later convinced the farmers to call off the protest, after which traffic resumed on the highway.
