Hyderabad: Five cases were registered by the Rachakonda Police against those involved in the late night disturbance at Karmanghat on Tuesday night.
A Sub-inspector of police, a driver and a few other persons were injured following a skirmish over transportation of cattle. A few police vehicles too were damaged.
According to the police, the trouble started when a few youngsters tried to stop two persons who were transporting cattle in a vehicle on the Karmanghat road around midnight. However, the transporters argued and left the place only to be waylaid by a group of youngsters a little ahead on the Karmanghat road.
“An argument ensued between the two persons and the youngsters who are reportedly connected to a cow vigilante group. More people gathered and both groups attacked each other resulting in tension,” the Rachakonda Police said.
In the melee, members of the cow vigilante group tried to escape by taking shelter in a nearby temple but were reportedly chased and attacked. Soon persons belonging to a particular community gathered and tried to stage a road block demanding action against those who entered the temple premises.
Following the trouble, police from nearby police stations rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the group. In between, some persons damaged police vehicles by pelting stones. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by deploying additional forces. The police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd.
Police patrolling was increased in the nearby areas to prevent trouble from escalating. Police pickets continue to be deployed in the area. The situation is now peaceful, senior police officials said.
The cases were booked in Meerpet and Saroornagar police stations.
