Mulugu: A jawan was injured as an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded when he was engaged in combing operations on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border in the district on Friday evening.

The incident took place at Jella in the Pamunur forest area in Venkatapuram in the district. The injured jawan, Savajit Pathak of the Central Reserve Police Force 39 Battalion, was airlifted to Venkatapuram by helicopter and from there taken to Warangal by ambulance for better treatment.

It may be noted that around 2,000 security personnel from the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, Greyhounds and District Reserve Guard have been taking part in anti-Naxal operations in the Karregutta forests for the past few days.

After a decisive and large-scale raid on Karregutta hillocks a few months ago, the police took control of a major part of the area and set up forward operating bases at Gunjaparthi, Elamidi, Galgam, Tadapala and Pamunur.

It was said that forces have also been deployed in the forests near Pamunur, Morumuru, Cheekupally and Krishnapuram in Venkatapuram and Wajedu mandals to intensify anti-Naxal operations as Union Home Minister Amit Shah’ March 31 deadline to wipe out Naxalism in India is drawing close.

There were reports of five Maoists being killed in an exchange of fire between the naxals and security forces on Thursday, but Bastar range IGP Sundarraj P said no encounter took place in the hillocks and the combing operations were going on as usual.
