Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Police on Wednesday arrested Mohd Ilyas Ahmed Khan, a resident of Nagarkurnool district, in connection with the hit-and-run case resulting in the death of three women pedestrians on NH-44 at Nandigama a fortnight ago. He was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, police said.

It was on April 20, that Ilyas (47), who was heading in his car towards Nagarkurnool driving in a rash and negligent manner hit P Aruna, V Sakku, and V Lalli, all construction workers from Shamshabad, who were standing on the roadside. According to the Cyberabad Traffic Police, Ilyas drove at high speed and hit the pedestrians.

“After the incident, neither did he stop the vehicle nor shift the injured persons to the hospital. Due to his rash attitude, all three died on the spot. This amounts to culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” police said, adding that Ilyas, knowing that the pedestrians were injured and needed help, fled from the spot.

A case was booked at the Nandigama police station and the suspect was nabbed from his house in Nagarkurnool late on Wednesday. Officials said as per section 134 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, the driver must help the injured persons in an accident by shifting to the nearest hospital and also to inform the police about the circumstances of the accident, failing which they will be liable for legal action. The driving license of such persons may also be suspended or cancelled.
