Hyderabad: A decades-old tree was chopped down at Krishna Kanth Park in Yousufguda on Saturday, sparking outrage among daily walkers and environmental activists. The GHMC’s Urban Biodiversity Wing (UBD) said it was removed to block unauthorised access to the park after hours.
During the removal process which began around 8 am, workers cut the tree, lifted its sections and transported the green waste using a GHMC garbage truck. A sapling was then planted on the site.
A GHMC UBD official told ‘Telangana Today‘, “The tree was located along the compound wall, giving access to the park. Anti-social elements through this tree are entering the park during night hours. To avoid this, the tree was removed”.
Morning walkers and yoga practitioners, who frequent the park’s lush greenery, expressed their anguish over the removal. They argued that cutting trees without a proper ecological assessment could lead to adverse impacts.
“The GHMC UBD officials must provide a detailed explanation for the tree removal, leaving many questions unanswered,” several walkers said.
Krishna Kanth Park is known for its verdant surroundings and attracts hundreds of visitors daily for walking, yoga and relaxation under the tree canopy.
