Dental surgeons lack formal surgical training to perform hair transplants, Telangana Medical Council clarifies
State Medical council in Telangana warns that dentists do not have knowledge and training to perform hair transplants and aesthetic procedures

Hyderabad: Telangana Medical Council on Thursday issued a notice to the general public stating that dentists (Bachelor in Dental Surgery), dental surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons (Master in Dental Surgery) lack the formal surgical knowledge and training to perform aesthetic procedures and hair transplants.
The Council said that hair transplant should preferably be undertaken only by those who have surgical grooming like formal surgical training such as MCh/DNB Plastic Surgery, MD/DNB Dermatology with adequate grooming in dermatological surgical procedures.
“It is also noted that the above named specialities have Hair Transplantation as a core topic in their curriculum,” the notice said.
The Council also said that aesthetic procedures should be undertaken only by those RMPs (Registered Medical Practitioners) who have adequate training to perform these procedures as per their curriculum.
“So, curriculum of various specialties should be the guiding principle for all RMP’s while undertaking any procedure including aesthetics and hair transplant procedures.”
The Council notified that Dentists (BDS)/ Dental Surgeons, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (MDS) do not have the aforesaid specialties as core topic in their curriculum and as such they lack formal surgical knowledge and training to perform the aforesaid procedures.
