Hyderabad: If you think you can bid goodbye to monsoons, which have been quite active in Telangana this year, then think twice! Telangana could continue to experience a prolonged wet spell and colder temperatures till the end of October.
The possibility of heavy rainfall till late October is likely due to a combination of factors, including Northeast monsoons (which begins in Tamil Nadu and remains active between October and December), the delayed withdrawal of the current South West Monsoons and other global climate phenomena.
Independent weather tracker from Hyderabad, who also consults for the GHMC and Telangana Police, R Balaji, on Sunday expects rains to remain active till October third week.
“Monsoon rains, whether it is South West Monsoons or Northeast monsoons, will remain active until the end of October. Over the next two weeks in September, people can expect short dry spells and even thunderstorms across the State. There are other climate phenomena, like a combination of La Nina and IOD, that are likely to cause delayed monsoon withdrawals. Farmers need to prepare for adverse impact of rains during crop harvesting and other agricultural activities,” he posted on X.
He was referring to the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), a weather phenomenon that significantly influences south west monsoons in India and causes sea surface temperatures in the western and eastern parts of the Indian ocean fluctuate. According to weather forecasts, this year’s weak/negative IOD is likely to contribute to slower than the usual withdrawal of the monsoons.
Performance of South West monsoons so far in TS:
• Actual rainfall received between June and September 14 is 830.2 mm
• Normal rainfall by this time is 655 mm, which means 27 percent excess rains
• Not a single district received deficient rainfall so far
• Hyderabad received 666.5 mm rainfall against normal of 540.3 mm, which is 23 percent excess
• Rangareddy received 684.6 mm against normal of 460 mm, which is 49 percent excess
• Medchal-Malkajgiri received 641 mm against 514.9mm, which is 24 percent excess
