Mangaluru: The ongoing SIT investigation into the sensational allegation that hundreds of bodies were buried illegally in Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district a decade ago has taken a significant turn. An anonymous individual and complainant has identified specific forest locations near the Netravati river bathing ghat where he claims several bodies were interred without legal procedure.
According to sources, the whistleblower showed SIT officials the same site where he had earlier brought a human skull and where he believes more skeletal remains exist. The individual reportedly marked not only burial spots but also grave-like mounds in the vicinity. Based on his inputs, the SIT marked several suspected grave sites within the forest interior, initiating the first stage of scientific verification.
Geo-tagging and GPS mapping were done at the site, with experts from the Forest and Revenue Departments, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), an osteologist, anthropologist and medico-legal professionals present. The team also recorded the location using photographs and video footage for digital evidence. Soil composition, terrain features and environmental conditions were assessed to prepare for exhumation.
The site identification process lasted around 45 minutes under the supervision of SIT officer Dayama. Multiple spots were marked for further investigation, where a scientific excavation will be done to recover possible human remains and confirm burial evidence.
To safeguard the area, temporary tape fencing has been put up. Further steps include examining soil depth and preparing for excavation. While the whistleblower’s input has pushed the probe forward, questions remain about his identity and motive, especially why he chose to come forward now.
This development has increased the seriousness of the Dharmasthala case, with the SIT expected to intensify its operations in the coming days.
