Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the managements of educational institutions would be held directly responsible for anti-social activities, including drug abuse, in the vicinity of their campuses.

He said school and college managements have to closely monitor student behaviour and ensure drug-free campuses.

“The presence of drugs in any institution is a sign of failure by its management. Vigilance by all stakeholders is the only way to curb this menace,” Revanth Reddy said. If needed, cases will be filed against managements that are ignorant of drug abuse near their campuses.

Speaking on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event at Shilpakala Vedika on Thursday, Revanth Reddy said while parents should keep vigil on their children, schools and colleges have a bigger responsibility. He reminded that both parents are forced to work to fund the education of their children.

“You are collecting a huge amount as fee. Children also spend more time in and around these institutions. Hence, you cannot wash off your responsibility by claiming that you are only responsible for their education,” he told educational institutions.

Highlighting government initiatives, Revanth Reddy announced that TGANB (Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau) would now be known as EAGLE (Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement), a specialised unit to detect and destroy ganja cultivation as well as drug trafficking.
