Hyderabad: The idea of TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to bring together all non-BJP and non-Congress political forces at the national level to upkeep the federal spirit of the country appears to be gaining momentum ahead of the Assembly elections in five States. This is evident from several national leaders paying ‘courtesy’ calls on the Chief Minister at Pragathi Bhavan.

For the first time in 2018, the TRS president mooted the idea of a non-BJP and non—Congress front. He had then met his counterparts from various States including Mamata Banerjee, Naveen Patnaik, Pinarayi Vijayan and also a few Opposition leaders such as Akhilesh Yadav and MK Stalin, who is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Though the idea did not completely transform into a collective action, it has gained traction among political circles now. The idea of non-BJP and non-Congress political front, comprising mostly regional political parties, has been evolving ever since.

However, there has been unexpected action happening in Hyderabad ahead of elections in five States. Last week, the top leadership of the Left parties – CPI and CPM, met Chandrashekhar Rao separately seeking his support to fight for ‘BJP Mukht Bharat’. Both the Left parties felt there was a dire need for alternate leadership at the national level as the Congress party had utterly failed to lead the Opposition and evict the BJP from the Centre. They strongly proposed bringing together like-minded progressive forces on to the same platform to fight against the anti-people and anti-farmer policies of the Modi government.

Less than two days after the Communist parties held a meeting with Chandrashekhar Rao, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav landed in Hyderabad in a chartered flight along with his party leaders and called on the TRS president. He even had RJD president and former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav interact with Chandrashekhar Rao over telephone on national politics. The RJD pledged its complete support to the efforts of the Chief Minister towards the reunification of secular and democratic forces.

Last month, Chandrashekhar Rao had discussions with DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin where they are learnt to have discussed the plans for a new front as an alternative to both BJP and Congress.

“Ever since the ruling TRS raised its voice against the Narendra Modi government’s anti-people and anti-farmer policies, Hyderabad has been witnessing hectic political activity. The TRS leaders including the party working president and Minister KT Rama Rao are dropping enough hints about the party’s role in national politics,” said a political analyst. During his recent ‘AskKTR’ session on Twitter, Rama Rao said the party will take a call soon on campaigning for Samajwadi Party after consultations with the party leadership.

The party leaders stated that Hyderabad will see more political activity in the coming months as TRS which has no major election in the State in near the future, is keen to take the lead in national politics.
