Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to further improve its recycling initiatives in the city by generating wealth out of waste.
As a part of the exercise, efforts are underway to set up two Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling plants, one each in the southern and northern parts of the city. These facilities will be in addition to the existing two plants at Jeedimetla and Fathullaguda.
Currently, the preparation of proposals for setting up the two new plants is underway. Once the proposals are drafted, the civic body would be inviting companies to set up the recycling plant on their own land. The land parcel should be of a minimum of five acres as per the proposal.
User charges will be collected by the company setting up the plant and as per the, the user charges collected could be more for builders and less for people in slums. To make sure that neither builders nor the individuals were exploited, the civic body will set a the maximum slab rate.
The onus of collecting the debris from the localities allocated also lies with the company and the revenue generated by recycling will completely go to it. After recycling, by-products from the construction and demolition debris, the other waste left include metal, sand and silt. These will be put to use in preparing parking tiles, pavement tiles, kerb stones, pre-cast compound walls and interlocking bricks.
Presently an estimated 1,500 metric tonne to 2,000 metric tonne of debris is generated every day within GHMC limits and this debris is being recycled by the C&D plant in Jeedimetla and Fathullaguda. Both the facilities are equipped to recycle 500 metric tonne of debris a day.
To dispose of the debris, building owners or contractors with demolition waste can contact Ph 1800 120 1159 for a scientific disposal of the same. As a tipping fee, an amount of Rs 342 per metric tonne will be charged and if the person transports the waste directly to the plant, Rs 85.50 per metric tonne is charged.
On Tuesday, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, along with GHMC Standing Committee Members and GHMC officials visited the C&D Waste Recycling Plant in Jeedimetla.
