Polytechnics merger with YISU: TP‑JAC urges govt to safeguard diploma education
Protests by polytechnic students intensified across Telangana against the merger of polytechnics with Young India Skill University. The Telangana Polytechnic Joint Action Committee urged the government to safeguard diploma education, staff service conditions, and students’ prospects.
Hyderabad: With protests by polytechnic students‘ spreading across the State over the merger of polytechnics with Young India Skill University (YISU), the Telangana Polytechnic Joint Action Committee (TP-JAC) on Wednesday urged the State government to address staff and students’ concerns, including the future of diploma education.
During a meeting chaired by Advisor to government (Education) Keshava Rao and Education department secretary Dr. Yogita Rana, a TP-JAC delegation, raised their concerns over the merger of polytechnic colleges with YISU, which is under the Shakti department, and students’ apprehensions over the scrapping of lateral entry into undergraduate engineering education.
The delegation explained the distinct nature of the polytechnic education system, which is different from the Industrial Training Institutes and Advanced Training Centres that are under the Shakti department. It also raised staff service matters, job security, promotions and other benefits for teaching and non-teaching staff.
The TP-JAC urged the officials to ensure that the future of polytechnic students, their higher education and employment opportunities are not affected. It also sought adequate protection to ensure that the interests of the staff currently working are not affected. “We would monitor the situation and decide on the necessary course of action in line with the interests of students and staff,” said Nagaraju, Chairman TP-JAC.
