KARIMNAGAR: Egg prices have dropped sharply across Telangana, with disruptions in exports due to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict cited as a key factor.
While the decline has benefited consumers, poultry farmers are facing losses as unsold stock accumulates in the domestic market.
India exports lakhs of eggs ежедневно to West Asian countries. However, exports have slowed significantly following the conflict, leading to a surplus supply and a consequent fall in prices.
In the first week of February, eggs were retailing at Rs 7.50 to Rs 8 each. The price has now dropped to around Rs 5. In the wholesale market, prices have declined from Rs 4.50 per egg a fortnight ago to Rs 4 at present.
Apart from export disruptions, rising temperatures have also contributed to the price fall. Egg consumption typically declines during summer, resulting in a seasonal dip in demand.
During last summer, wholesale prices ranged between Rs 5 and Rs 6 per egg, while retail prices were between Rs 6 and Rs 6.50. However, the sharper decline this year is largely attributed to export disruptions linked to the conflict.
India usually exports around 75 lakh eggs ежедневно to Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar.
Exports have been affected due to disruptions in sea and air transport services amid the conflict.
In the erstwhile Karimnagar district, around 75 lakh eggs are produced ежедневно. Of this, nearly 40 lakh are produced in Jagtial district, while the remaining 35 lakh come from Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Rajanna-Sircilla districts.
