Khammam: CPI (ML) Mass Line leaders Gummadi Narasaiah and Gunda Satyanarayana Reddy demanded that the State government take immediate steps to sanction and construct Indiramma houses for families displaced from Bhoodan land at Velugumatla itself.

They strongly condemned the demolition of 600 to 700 houses of the poor on Bhoodan land at Velugumatla in Khammam urban mandal and held the State government and three district ministers responsible for the loss suffered by the poor. They submitted a memorandum to Additional Collector P Srinivas Reddy at Prajavani here on Monday. The Bhoodan lands belong to poor people, not landlords or real estate traders, they said.

Of the 61 acres of land, 31 acres have been encroached upon by land grabbers, but instead of taking action against them, houses of the poor were demolished. This shows the anti-people attitude of the government, they said.

Speaking to the media, ex-MLA Narsaiah said Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy should keep his promise of providing house plots and Indiramma houses to the families by March 15. The government should relax the rules while allocating house plots.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes member Jatoth Hussain Naik said the commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the demolition of houses at Velugumatla for investigation. He interacted with the affected families on Sunday and demanded that the government build houses on the same site. He wanted the Khammam authorities to submit a report on the incident within a week and said otherwise they would be summoned to Delhi.
