HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at Rangareddy Collectorate on Monday when a farmer Jangaiah, accusing the government of taking away his land without any compensation, doused himself with petrol and tried to immolate himself.

However, the police personnel stationed at the Collectorate stopped Jangaiah and brought the situation under control. Along with Jangaiah, a few other farmers from Raviryala reached the Collectorate to stage a protest and demand fair compensation for their lands.

They said the government was laying 350 feet roads to the Future City from their lands without offering any compensation. The farmers demanded that the government offer land for land or pay the market rate as compensation for acquiring their lands.

All this happened after a few officials turned up in their fields early in the day. They wanted to install marking stones in the fields and this triggered heated arguments. The police, who accompanied the officials, stopped the farmers from arguing and said there were government orders. Despite the farmers’ pleas, the officials did not relent, forcing them to stage a protest at the Rangareddy Collectorate.

Since the last few weeks, farmers from Raviryala and neighbouring villages have been up in arms against acquisition of their lands for laying roads to the Future City. About 1000 acres is proposed to be acquired and over 4,800 farmers are likely to close their lands.
