Farmers elated as Red chilli price touches Rs 48,000 per quintal in Warangal

Warangal: Prices of red chilli have been shooting up for the last one month at the Enumamula agriculture market year causing overwhelming joy to the farmers.

Enumamula is one of Asia’s biggest agriculture markets located near here. While a quintal of red chilli (Deshi variety) has got a record price of Rs 48,000 per quintal on Tuesday, the same variety was sold for Rs 45,000 per quintal on Monday.


According to sources, the luckiest farmer is Pulluri Madhava Rao from Pulluri Ramaiah Palli in Bhupalpally mandal who got the record price when he brought 44 bags to the market on Tuesday. He got Rs 19.80 lakh in all.

The season commenced with Rs 27,000 per quintal, and there has been a great demand for ‘Single Patti’ variety and Deshi variety chilli which is used to make pickles and chilli powder.

Meanwhile, a farmer from Karkapalli of Ghanpur mandal in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district who brought 24 bags of red chilli (Single Patti) got Rs 45,000 per quintal on Monday.

On March 10, one farmer got Rs 42,000 per quintal for Single Patti variety. It may be added here that the red chilli was sold for only Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000 per quintal last year in contrast to the highest ever prices this year.Low yield due to pest attacks and international market conditions are said to be reasons for the record prices at the Enumamula market.

Meanwhile, sources said that several farmers who can afford waiting for some time had stored their produce in cold storage units expecting high prices. The red chilli that is traded at this market yard is mostly exported to Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and also abroad.

The Enumamula market has earned a total of Rs 33.63 crore revenue in the form of cess during this financial year. “While the target is Rs 28.30 crore, we have so far got Rs 33.63 crore exceeding the target. Our market has stood in the top slot in revenue during this fiscal in the erstwhile district,” said secretary B Venkatesh Rahul, and added that the cess earned by the market is the highest ever since its inception.
