Mancherial: In a tragic incident, four coal miners died when coal caved in on them when they were excavating coal inside of the SRP3 underground mine in Srirampur town on Wednesday. A rescue operation was on to bring out the miners who were trapped under debris of the coal. According to officials of SCCL, the deceased miners were identified as timber man Beera Lachaiah (60), Support man Krishna Reddy (58) Badli workers Satya Narasimha Raju (32) and Rinka Chandrasekhar (29). Lachaiah is a resident of Namnoor village in Hajipur mandal. The remaining miners belonged to different parts of Srirampur town.

Lachaiah, Krishna Reddy, Narasimha Raju and Chandrasekhar received fatal injuries when the coal from roof of the mine fell on them, resulting in instantaneous death for the four. Some more miners are feared to have been trapped in debris of the coal. About 21 miners, supporting staff and others were discharging duties in the mine at the time of the mishap.

The SCCL, in a statement, said that the miners were stitching the roof at 24 LS/21XD/2SP-2/3 Seam and about 15 meters from the junction in 3SP-2 preparatory district. They were killed when the roof suddenly fell on them at around 10.30 am,

Upon learning about the mishap, Srirampur Chief General Manager Suresh and manager of the mine Ravi Kumar rushed to the spot and made inquiries about the accident. A rescue operation was launched to retrieve the miners who were still inside the mine. A pale of gloom descended over the mine and Srirampur following the tragedy.

In the meantime, miners expressed concern over the safety at the working place. They alleged that authorities of the coal giant were showing laxity in preventing accidents and deaths of miners. They demanded the officials concerned to take steps for avoiding recurrence similar incidents in future. Leaders of various trade unions criticized the authorities of SCCL over the poor safety measures.
