Hyderabad: Lack of requisite number of admissions is sounding a death knell for several engineering college managements every year.
For the academic year 2021-22, four engineering colleges have knocked the doors of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) seeking permission for progressive closure. A progressive closure means that these colleges will not have fresh admissions for the academic year 2021-22.
However, the existing students in these colleges will continue their academics and the colleges will cease to exist once the last batch of the students pass out.
According to the university officials, last year also a couple of college managements have approached for closure. One of the main reasons for the managements to shut their institutions was admissions being less than 25 per cent of the total intake available.
While some were closing the colleges, several managements were doing away with traditional courses which were not in demand among students and introducing courses in the emerging technologies like cyber security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science etc.
Meanwhile, a total of 232 including 148 engineering, 73 Pharmacy and 11 standalone colleges have applied to the JNTU-H seeking affiliation for the academic year 2021-22.
According to the details available with the university, 148 engineering colleges have applied for affiliation for 89,400 seats in 955 different courses. Likewise, 73 pharmacy colleges have sought affiliation for 6,940 seats in 77 courses. At the PG level, the professional colleges have sought permission for 6,258 seats in 304 MTech courses and 3,036 seats in 204 MPharmacy courses for the academic year 2021-22. The university has decided to complete the affiliation process for the engineering and pharmacy colleges by August 28.
The JNTU-H has also decided to do away with the Selection Committee Minutes (SCMs) for faculty selection in the private affiliated colleges of the university from the next academic year.
According to JNTU-H Vice Chancellor Prof Katta Narasimha Reddy, the university would conduct a screening test for selection of the faculty members for the affiliated colleges. Based on the ranks secured by candidates, the colleges can choose the candidates. This new process would be completed in February/March, 2022 for the academic year 2022-23 and there would be no SCMs.
