Four farmers killed, six injured as tin-roofed shed caves in on them in Mancherial

Four farmers died and six were injured after a tin-roof shed collapsed during unseasonal rains and strong winds in Mancherial district, Telangana, while they were protecting paddy, prompting calls for government relief and improved procurement and safety measures

Mancherial: Four farmers were killed on the spot, while six others sustained injuries when a tin-roofed sheds in agriculture fields caved in on them due to unseasonal rains coupled with gales at Kotthuru and Gampalapalli villages in Luxettipet mandal on Tuesday night midnight.

Locals said that Venkatesh, Abhiram, Lachanna and Nagaraju sustained serious injuries when the iron tins of the shed collapsed on them all of a sudden due to unseasonal rains accompanied by gales at around 1 am. Six more farmers received minor injuries. They were initially admitted to a hospital in Luxettipet and were then rushed to a hospital in Karimnagar for better treatment. Their medical condition was said to be stable.

Around 10 farmers were guarding their paddy produce shifted to a procurement centre at the villages at night. They were trying to cover the grain heap with polythene sheets to protect the grain from being drenched at the time of the incident. Farmer community expressed shock over the tragic incident. It requested the government to extend support to family members of the victims.

Meanwhile, normal life has been affected due to rains in the district. Supply of power was disrupted when the electric poles were damaged by the gales. Traffic came to a standstill on different routes causing inconvenience to motorists. People urged the government to take steps to restore power.

Former MLA Nadipelli Diwakar Rao visited the injured farmers at the hospital in Luxettipet town. He demanded that the government provide immediate relief and take measures to expedite the process of paddy procurement. He alleged that negligence of the government claimed four lives of the farmers.
