With the world facing unprecedented challenges and ever since the phrase ‘digital native’ was coined to describe this generation, the well-being of children matters more than ever. It is important to get our children off their devices and get them to read instead and develop great enthusiasm in the readers for reading. At this juncture Delhi Public School, Mahendra Hills took the initiate of enhancing the reading skills of class V students by assigning the weekly reading task to comprehend fiction and non-fiction text which invited them with series of a multi-disciplinary array of activities. Students were encouraged to create, to express their understanding of the reading, either in writing, discussion, graphic representation, artwork or role play thus allowing them to learn from each other and to integrate the content of reading material into their knowledge base. These activities also served as a good opportunity to portray good manners and help them grow up to become humble and confident individuals. Students actively took part in the weekly reading task assigned and are gradually embracing the words on a page to gain the literacy skills they need to become fluent and avid readers.
