Fuel concerns spark work from home debate on social media in India
Concerns over potential fuel disruptions due to the Middle East geopolitical crisis have triggered discussions on social media about adopting work-from-home policies in India, with users suggesting remote work could reduce commuting, fuel consumption, and overall energy usage.
Hyderabad: The ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Middle East and the resultant fuel crisis have triggered discussions on social media platforms like X, on Work From Home (WFH) as a necessity.
With several countries, including Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines mandating WFH and four-day work weeks for their employees to curb national fuel consumption, a lot of chatter related to this has become active on Indian X.
A large number of social media handles are talking about the possibility of a fuel shortage, potentially making the daily commute challenging. Tech-based media handles on X have started opinion polls on whether India should declare WFH for corporate employees to tackle fuel disruptions.
Some users on X have shared their companies have already declared WFH, effective immediately. “With the ongoing war and threat to fuel supply, the best thing to do would be to declare WFH and let people spend the money they would’ve spent on commuting on other things. Use the relatively quiet streets to repair roads, footpaths and infrastructure in war footing. Fuel saved, consumption revived and cities cleaned up, win-win for all around,” posted Manasa Manjunath on X.
Another user, Arjun Krishnamurthy, on X posted “I think nationwide WFH should be implemented in India. This saves fuel and also saves people from eating outside, which would require commercial LPG. It’s a double save”.
