Karimnagar: Bio-mining unit established in Autonagar Dump Yard to clear garbage has been halted due to various reasons. As a result, garbage stocks in the dump yard piled up in a big way. Frequent fire accidents in dump yard, especially in the summer season have become a common occurrence. People from surrounding areas face severe difficulties as the smoke spreads dense and thick whenever there is a fire accident.
In order to find a permanent solution to the problem, the Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar established a bio-mining unit in the Autonagar Dump Yard spread over nine acres. The unit was set up under the Karimnagar Smart City programme by spending Rs 16 crore. The proposal for setting up a bio-mining plant was prepared by the BRS government. It was decided to clear the entire garbage piled up in the dump yard in two years and generate fertiliser out of garbage. Besides cleaning the garbage, a park would be developed by planting attractive flower-bearing saplings, it was planned.
A Hyderabad-based firm got the contract. The company, which had decided to clear the garbage by establishing two plants, started work two years ago. However, the bio-mining process stalled after some time. The contractor stalled the mining process due to the non-clearance of pending bills. Recently, Municipal authorities issued notices to the contractor, it is learnt. Every day, about 135 to 155 metric tons of garbage is being generated in 60 divisions of MCK. As there is no process to clear it, about 250 to 275 lakh metric tons of garbage have been piled up.
