Hyderabad: After vehement protests to defer Group-I Main examination citing multiple issues, including cancellation of the GO 29, aspirants across multiple centres in Hyderabad reported that the General English exam, a qualifying test, held on Monday was simple and easy to navigate.
Several candidates who appeared for the examination, in various centres in the city noted that the question paper was set at a standard comparable to that of Class X. According to candidates, this was done to accommodate students particularly from the rural areas.
Some of the questions asked included writing a letter to the editor of a prominent daily newspaper highlighting the effects of air pollution, rearranging sentences in the correct sequence to form a coherent paragraph and using given idioms/phrases in sentences.
Candidates were asked to write synonyms and antonyms for words besides correct spellings for the given words and fill in the blanks. Students were also tested for their knowledge in passive voice and indirect speech. Passages with questions and punctuating a passage were also asked. Overall, there were 15 questions for a total of 100 marks. “The question paper is simple and similar Class X English examination. The paper is set in a way that even students from rural backgrounds can easily write. There are no issues with regards to conduct of the examination in my centre,” said Sharath, Group-I aspirant, who appeared for the examination at a centre in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
Even coaching experts found that question paper simple and not lengthy. “The paper setters stuck to basic level English of Class X standard and it is not going to be taxing on Telugu medium students. They stuck to the declared pattern,” Deepika Reddy, a Group Services coaching expert and director of Shikara Academy. The TGPSC issued Group-I notification for a total of 563 posts for which the Main exams have been scheduled from October 21 to 27.
