Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is likely to be divided into three units in February.
The GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan hinted at this while speaking to the media on 2025 GHMC achievements on Wednesday. He, however, did not disclose further details on how the division would be carried out or why February was being considered. The State government has already issued a Gazette notification on 300 GHMC wards in December.
Later, Karnan told ‘Telangana Today’ that the five-year tenure of the present GHMC council would conclude in February 2026, and the State government may announce the formation of 3 GHMCs. Regarding elections for 300 wards, he said, “Telangana State Election Commission will take a final call after completion of 3 GHMCs.”
Karnan said sanitation continues to be the top priority and to strengthen the sanitation operations in all 300 GHMC wards, a special drive was also launched. The GHMC achieved 6th rank in Swachh Survekshan rankings in July 2025, a 7-Star Garbage Free City rating, Water ODF re-certification, and received the Promising Swachh Shehar of Telangana award. In 2026, we are planning to achieve this rating to top 1 in India, he said.
Regarding the stray dog menace, Karnan said Supreme Court orders in this regard were being implemented. There is a proposal to set up 12 stray dog shelters in all newly formed 12 zones. The GHMC veterinary wing removed 2,897 stray dogs from public places up to November.
