Hyderabad: The 19.8 MW capacity Waste to Energy (WtE) plant at Jawaharnagar will soon be enhanced to 48 MW, not only increasing the capacity of the plant to produce more electricity, but also to scientifically dispose of more municipal waste in the city.
Established in August 2020, the Jawaharnagar plant consumes about 1200 tonnes per day (TPD) of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). From the commencement of operation of the WtE plant, 185 million units of electricity was generated by consuming 5.4 lakh tonnes of RDF as of November 2021. The plant is operated under the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM) Project of GHMC, by Hyderabad Integrated MSW Ltd.
The Government of Telangana had accorded permission to enhance the capacity of the existing 19.8 MW Waste to energy plant at Jawaharnagar to 48 MW in December 2020. The environmental clearance for enhancement of the capacity was accorded in December 2021, by the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. It is expected to commission the project within 18 months of entering the Power Purchase Agreement.
Another 14.5 MW WtE plant will be established at the Treatment Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) land at Dundigal, in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The plant is under construction and is expected to commence operations from September 2022. These plants are a substitute to fossil fuels plans, with nil or least dependence on coal, oil and natural gas for generating electricity.
