GHMC to launch major sanitation drive across 300 wards in Hyderabad from December 29
GHMC will conduct a sanitation drive across 300 Hyderabad wards from December 29 to January 31. The campaign includes cleaning roads, lakes, parks, and garbage-prone areas, promoting school composting, imposing fines, and removing scrap vehicles and public toilet debris.
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will launch a special sanitation drive across 300 wards from December 29 and will continue up to January 31, 2026.
GHMC commissioner R V Karnan, in a statement on Sunday, said, “This is the first major sanitation drive effort after the recent delimitation of wards, and it aims to clear legacy waste and encourage community involvement in Swachhata.”
The drive will begin with the cleaning of foot overbridges on December 29. The campaign will then cover flyovers, roadsides, dividers, central medians, and kerbs. Subsequently, the focus will shift to lakes and nalas, footpaths and parks, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and waste near transformers and electric poles, he said.
The drive will also target ‘garbage vulnerable points’ (GVPs), green waste, and legacy waste, with plans to convert GVPs into selfie points using wall paintings, rangoli, and plantations, according to Karnan.
Schools will be encouraged to use segregated waste bins and practice on-site composting. Spot fines will be imposed for open urination, littering, and illegal dumping. The removal of unclaimed scrap vehicles and dilapidated public toilets is also planned, along with cleanliness and plantation drives around public toilets, said the release.
