Hyderabad: In the era defined by artificial intelligence, internet of things, and cloud computing, girl students studying in several schools in Telangana are still struggling to attend nature calls as the institutions lack a functional toilet facility.
The Socio-Economic Outlook 2026 released by the State government has exposed the sorry state of affairs in schools across the State.
As per the report, nine per cent of the schools do not have a functional toilet facility for girls, forcing them to either relieve themselves in open spaces or stay back home, a basic requirement in an institution.
Further, 17 per cent of the schools do not have a functional boys’ facility. In both categories, the Telangana schools with no functional toilets are more than the national average.
The survey also revealed that five per cent of the institutions still do not have electricity, while about 15 per cent of schools do not have digital libraries, and another 14 per cent lack playgrounds.
The computers, as per the report, are in use in 81.2 per cent of the schools, reflecting that nearly 19 per cent of institutions have no computers.
The enrolment in the government schools is steadily declining, with data showing that government school admissions are not even half of those in private schools.
According to the report, 16,61,520 students enrolled in 24,214 government schools. In contrast, 11,689 private schools have a staggering 37,43,893 enrolments.
This means that even though private schools are fewer in number, they are attracting far more students, while government schools, despite being more numerous, are failing to enrol pupils.
