Government Engineering College Kosgi struggles to attract students for third consecutive year

Hyderabad: For the straight third consecutive batch, the Government Engineering College Kosgi, which has been established by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in his Kodangal constituency, is struggling to find students.

A staggering 73.8 percent out of 214 seats remained vacant after the Telangana Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (TG EAPCET) 2026 second-phase admission counselling seat allotment released on Wednesday. This reflects poor aspirants’ preference for the college.

As per Revanth Reddy’s directions, the Technical Education department commenced the engineering college in Kosgi by upgrading the existing Government Polytechnic College from the academic year 2024-25. This is the first engineering college established in the government sector under the control of the Commissioner of Technical Education, with affiliation to JNTU-Hyderabad.

As per the demand, the government launched CSE, CSE AI & ML, and CSE Data Science programmes in this college. However, ever since its inception, the college has been failing to attract students. One of the reasons for poor enrolment, according to sources, is lack of adequate buildings and other infrastructure required for holding the engineering classes. While the college has required faculty members with doctorates, it lacks buildings and lab infrastructure.

According to sources, initially, 11.2 acres had been proposed for the engineering college opposite to the existing Government Polytechnic College Kosgi building. However, the proposal has been kept in abeyance as the State government planned an education hub in Hakimpeta village. But both proposals are yet to fructify.

“There is a need to strengthen the college by constructing new academic blocks and adding new infrastructure as every year one new batch is being added. Why will students join a college, which does not have required infrastructure. The Chief Minister has to focus on this issue,” said sources.

Meanwhile, an overall, 84.9 percent out of 94,424 seats in 176 engineering colleges were allotted to students who participated in the second phase counselling. As many as 14,257 seats, including 1,584 in 21 university colleges and 12,513 in 152 private institutions, remained vacant.

Students who received provisional seat allotment must self-report online via the link https://tgeapcet.nic.in and pay the tuition fee on or before July 25, and report at the allotted college by July 28. Seat will stand automatically cancelled if students fail to self-report online, paying the tuition fee and reporting at allotted college before the deadline.
