Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) continues to be in the news for all the wrong reasons and this time it is the team selection for the upcoming Vijay Merchant Trophy.
CEO Suneel Kante released a list of 53 probables for the Under-16 tournament on Sunday attested by three selectors N Rajesh Yadav, chairman of selectors, Habeeb Ahmed and Anwar Ahmed Khan. However, hours later, HCA president Mohammed Azharuddin said the list of probables was invalid as the selectors were issued show cause notices for not attending the meeting to select the team a day before.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Azharuddin said, “The team list being circulated for Vijay Merchant trophy is illegal. The selectors were given show cause notice for not selecting the team on time and for not performing their duties. They have no right to select any team. They have to reply to the show cause notice first or else action will be taken against them. We will select the team in a couple of days.”
When asked about the Supreme Court decision to reconstitute the panel to run the HCA affairs, he said, “The Supreme Court has not given any order officially till now. They have asked for names but nothing has come to us on paper. People are saying whatever they feel like. They are dealing with the Supreme Court. It will be contempt of court. There is no order yet and how can people assume things and say whatever they want? When the order comes then we can move accordingly.”
Power supply issue
On the issue of power supply being cut by the electricity department to the Uppal stadium for non-payment of dues of over Rs 3 crore, Azhar said the electricity theft happened years ago and people then in office should have dealt with it. “I was nowhere in the picture. How can people question me? Arshad Ayub was the president when it happened. People then should have solved the issue. I am trying to clear it now. I spoke to our legal department. We will also speak to the government and see how we can solve it,” he said.
In 2015, the electricity officials found that power was fraudulently being drawn by HCA and slapped a notice and sought payment in a week’s time. However, the then HCA president Arshad Ayub and others went to court and brought a stay on the proceedings. However, the issue was left unresolved.
