Hyderabad: Praveen Kasam, Assistant Section Officer (ASO) at the Telangana Secretariat is among those who successfully cracked the first Group-II exam conducted after the formation of Telangana. “One should have long-term planning and analytical study to taste success in competitive examinations,” Praveen tells P Laxma Reddy.
Hailing from a small village, Fateshapur in Jangaon district, Praveen did schooling in the local government school and his intermediate and degree from a private college. Initially keen about a career in journalism, he joined a journalism school but after the formation of Telangana State and issuance of notifications for government jobs, he changed his mind and decided to go for a government job.
No thumb rule for preparations
There is no thumb rule on how many hours a day one should prepare for these examinations, he says. “One should check whether he/she is studying according to the syllabus or not. Preparing your own notes for all subjects is an added advantage,” Praveen said.
One should rely on standard books as well as authentic websites on the Internet, he advises, adding that the Telugu Akademi had published many special books on the competitive exams. The Yojana monthly magazine also helped him analyse and read current affairs. “Disaster management subject is now mandatory in every competitive exam as about 20 marks come up on this topic. For information on this, one must visit the website https://ndma.gov.in/ frequently,” Praveen suggests.
“If you look at the Groups’ syllabus, the highest marks are allotted to the history of Telangana. Group-I and Group-II have a combined 150 mark paper on the history of the Telangana movement. That’s why I focused more on this,” he says.
A holistic approach
TSPSC conducts the Group-II and most of the exams in objective type (multiple choice). But, one can achieve good results only by preparing in a descriptive manner which leads to a holistic understanding of a topic.
Don’t fall victim to pressure but steer clear of it to succeed, Praveen Kasam tells the candidates. “This is not good. We need to have clarity on our plans for the preparation. Preparation can be done in five ways – Understanding the syllabus, choosing the right information, writing notes on your own, analyzing and reading, thinking logically, and testing on your own (self-tests),” he adds.
And finally, he points out that it doesn’t matter how many books you read. “It’s important to remember how many times you read the same standard book.”
