Hyderabad: In a glaring case of official negligence, brand-new Kanti Velugu spectacles meant for public distribution were found dumped in garbage dumps at Allampally and Kothagadi on the outskirts of Vikarabad municipality on Thursday.
Locals passing by the area spotted piles of unused spectacles discarded in open trash. These spectacles, part of the BRS government’s flagship Kanti Velugu programme, were prescribed by doctors and distributed free of cost following eye screening camps conducted across the State.
Each spectacle box bore the image of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, indicating their direct link to the government initiative.
While officials have so far issued no explanation as to why the spectacles were discarded, the incident triggered strong reactions from various quarters. Citizens expressed anger over the health department’s careless handling of public resources and wastage of taxpayer money.
A video that surfaced on social media showed a local resident pointing at the heaps of spectacles and saying, “This is a gross negligence by health department officials and a waste of taxpayers’ money. The District Collector should initiate stern action against all the officials responsible for the unacceptable act.”
An investigation is awaited.
