Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao on Wednesday said the State government was taking up construction of one lakh double bedroom houses at a cost of Rs 9,714 crore in the city.
No other State or city in the country was taking up such a massive housing programme as was being done in Hyderabad, he said after inaugurating 324 2BHK houses at Jai Bhavani Nagar in Vanasthalipuram on Wednesday.
“Even after 72 years of Independence, no other State government is taking up such a massive housing programme for the poor in the country and only K Chandrashekhar Rao’s government is doing such work,” he said, adding that the construction quality of these dignity housing communities was on par with that of any private gated community in the city.

The Minister said of the one lakh houses being built in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, construction of nearly 90 per cent houses had been completed. About 10,000 double bedroom houses were ready for inauguration, he said.
The 324 houses were constructed at a cost of Rs 28 crore, he said while congratulating the beneficiaries.
“The government has spent about Rs 9 lakh on each house while the market value of the same unit could range between Rs 40 lakh to Rs.50 lakh. It was the responsibility of house owners to maintain the community area clean and not to dump trash in the surroundings. With the Covid-19 pandemic still a threat, it was important to ensure cleanliness on the premises,” he said.
The Minister directed officials and local elected public representatives to set up associations in the dignity housing communities to enable house owners maintain the premises and to ensure proper coordination with the civic body.
The double bedroom housing communities were equipped with service lifts, fire safety systems, parks and other facilities and as a means to facilitate proper maintenance of all these amenities, GHMC was setting up a few shops as well in the communities. Revenue generated by renting out these shops would aid in maintenance of the amenities, he said.
