Hyderabad: The Begumpet Airport authorities have issued notices to the residents of Anna Nagar in Secunderabad Cantonment, who have built high-rise buildings in the vicinity of the aerodrome, serking proof of building permissions.
The move comes apparently after the Air India crash incident in Ahmedabad, addressing concerns about people’s safety near airports.
A notice received by one of the resident read, “The Aerodrome Safeguarding Team of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) visited the addressee’s premises. Based on their observations, AAI Hyderabad Airport directed the property owner to submit the building permission issued by the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) along with the ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NoC) for height clearance issued by the AAI. The owner is to share copies of the documents with the Begumpet Airport authorities.”
Owners in the affected areas have expressed concern over the sudden demand for documentation and at being panicked at serving of the notices and questioned by the AAI.
“For many years, we have been staying here. We don’t understand why AAI suddenly issued notices and asked us for proof of documents. No cut-off date was also mentioned in the notices when we should submit the evidence of documents on the height of the buildings, ” one of the property owners told Telangana Today.
In Secunderabad Cantonment, several slums, including Rasoolpura, Anna Nagar, Indiramma Nagar, and CBN Nagar, are located near the Begumpet Airport aerodrome. Over 1 lakh people are residing in these areas.
A SCB senior official who is aware of the AAI notices commented and said, “The Airport officials may have served the notices for verification, which is necessary for security and administrative purposes.”
Ahmedabad Air India crash impact:
On June 18, 2025, the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued a Gazette Notification and asked the people near the Airports across the Country to submit objections/suggestions to prepare a draft on the demolition of obstructions caused by the buildings and trees, rules.
In the Gazette (b), the ‘Building’ is defined as “any structure, whether permanent or temporary, erected within a specified area around the aerodrome.
Sanki Ravinder, Secretary of the SCB-based NGO Cantonment Vikas Manch, has objected to the Civil Aviation Gazette and said, “The Begumpet Airport has not been using the aerodrome for commercial operations over the decade, since the new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) was built at Shamshabad. Thus, the notices which are served by the AAI, Begumpet, are not sanctimonious to the poor people who have been staying for over six decades.”
