Hyderabad: Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy and Hyderabad Incharge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar visited rain-affected areas such as Krishna Nagar, Yousufguda, and others on Friday and assured residents that work to ensure free flow of water would be expedited.
During the ministers’ inspection, residents complained that along with rainwater, drainage water was entering their houses. This was mainly due to narrow drains and trash accumulation in the nalas, residents informed the ministers.
The government has granted permission to expedite works, including the reconstruction of damaged nalas and widening of existing ones at specific locations. Instructions have also been issued to officials to clear trash and waste accumulated in the drains, said BC Welfare and Hyderabad Incharge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.
“These works will commence within a week. I appeal to residents to cooperate with civic officials and ensure there is no traffic disruption while the work is ongoing,” he said.
The main problem was the flow of drainage water along with rainwater. Generally, rainwater should clear within thirty minutes after the rains stop, but that did not happen in many areas, the minister added, noting that despite cabinet ministers being in New Delhi on Thursday, they continuously monitored the situation in the city.
On Thursday, heavy rains lashed several areas within Greater Hyderabad limits. Among them, Khajaguda received the highest rainfall of 12 cm, followed by SR Nagar and Khairthabad with 11 cm each. Likewise, Saroornagar recorded 10 cm of rainfall.
Incidentally, the ministers visited Krishna Nagar, Yousufguda, and neighboring areas, which fall under the Jubilee Hills constituency. It may be recalled that a by-election is to be conducted in the constituency due to the sudden death of sitting BRS MLA M. Gopinath.
