Hyderabad: With many families heading to mortgage centres to pledge gold ornaments for money to meet expenses fearing an extension of the lockdown, a city-based NGO has come forward to bail them out temporarily.
The Azad Khidmat Foundation is visiting mortgage centres, locally known as ‘rahen centres’, in the old city and after interacting with people there, is helping them out.
“After enquiring about their requirements, we are giving them some cash and a one month’s ration. People have just half a tola or one tola of gold with them and have started pledging it as their sources of income have dried up,” said the foundation’s chairman Abu Aimal.
The foundation started the initiative a week ago. “People who are mostly daily wage earners are pledging the gold for small amounts of Rs 3,000 or Rs 4,000 to pay house rents or to buy rations. So we are identifying the needy and helping them to prevent them being exploited,” he said.
So far the NGO has helped around 50 people in Vattepally, Teegalkunta, Fatimanagar and Chintalmet of Rajendranagar.
