Hyderabad: In a bid to improve accountability and address concerns over crimes involving a few individuals from the Nepali community, the Telangana Nepalese Welfare Association has proposed a structured registration system for Nepali workers across the State.

The association has submitted a proposal to the State government seeking approval to collect and maintain details of Nepali citizens, including their valid identity documents, residential addresses, workplaces and other basic information. The data would be maintained in a central database, with registered workers being issued association identity cards after government approval.

The Association’s General Secretary Tek B. Bhandari said employers should verify the identity of Nepali workers before hiring them. He stressed that the Nepali Citizenship Certificate (Nagarikta) is the primary proof of nationality and should be checked along with other documents such as passports, national identity cards, driving licences, voter cards and PAN cards wherever applicable.

“Among all the government identity cards, the Nepali Nagarikta is very important and precious for the citizens. So, the employers should verify if the worker has these documents and also retain the original copies with them for the period till they are employed for various works,” Bhandari said.

The association has also urged employers to approach it for background verification of prospective Nepali workers before offering employment.

According to Bhandari, the proposal was prepared following discussions with police authorities and aims to create a transparent database containing workers’ native addresses in Nepal, family details and employment information. “The registration system would help identify genuine workers and discourage criminal activity by ensuring better traceability,” he said.

In an unusual pattern, it is observed that Nepali women have been found playing a bigger role in the crimes committed by Nepali gangs or individuals in the city or across the State.

Bhandari explained the possible reason that while men are hired for outdoor work like Gorkha or security guard, driver or gardener, women are mostly hired for indoor works as cooks and domestic helps, which is the major reason why women get ready access to the household.
