Hyderabad: Alarmed by a surge in online exploitation cases, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has cautioned young women against falling prey to fake social media profiles and online manipulation.
Through a video message on social media on Saturday, he said cyber offenders were creating bogus accounts using images of good-looking men or film personalities to befriend girls on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. “After gaining their trust, the accused allegedly coaxes victims into sharing private photos and videos, which are later used to threaten and extort money,” he said.
Cybercrime Police noted that many victims hesitate to report such incidents due to fear of social stigma, often enduring mental trauma in silence. In extreme cases, the harassment has reportedly driven some to take drastic steps.
The Commissioner urged victims not to give in to blackmail and immediately seek help from family members or approach the police by dialing 100. He assured that cyber offenders can be traced despite using fake identities or digital masking tools.
He also advised parents to stay involved in their children’s digital lives and create a supportive environment for open communication.
