Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has issued a public advisory warning citizens against a new cyber fraud in which scammers are misusing the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ‘UDGAM’ portal to cheat people.

According to the advisory posted on ‘X’ on Friday, cybercriminals were sending fake messages and emails claiming that large sums of money are lying unclaimed in old bank accounts. The messages urge recipients to click on links to withdraw the amount, falsely citing the RBI’s ‘UDGAM’ (Unclaimed Deposits Gateway to Access Information) portal.

Police cautioned that clicking on such links can lead to mobile phones being hacked, resulting in bank accounts being emptied within minutes.

Fraudsters are also impersonating RBI or bank officials over phone calls and attempting to extract sensitive details such as OTPs and passwords.

Commissioner Sajjanar clarified that the RBI never asks for OTPs, passwords, or personal banking details over phone calls, messages, or emails.

Citizens seeking information on unclaimed deposits should use only the official UDGAM portal at https://udgam.rbi.org.in.
The advisory further urged people not to click on suspicious links received through WhatsApp, SMS, or email.

Victims of cyber fraud have been asked to immediately call the cybercrime helpline 1930 or file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.

Any delay in reporting, police warned, could reduce the chances of recovering the lost money.
