Hyderabad: A sharp increase was witnessed in crime against children and women in the city this year with the police registering 357 cases under POCSO Act and 2,393 cases under various IPC sections against those involved in crimes against women.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes and SHE teams) Shikha Goel said the police were seeing the increase in numbers as a healthy trend as more women and children were showing trust and faith in the police system and coming forward to make complaints.
“Of the total rape cases registered in the city only in six or seven cases there is the involvement of strangers while in rest of the cases, persons known to the victims committed the crime,” she said.
In regard to the POCSO cases, the official said, in the majority of the cases the victims are aged between 15 and 18. “On the pretext of marriage and friendship, the girls are ending up being exploited. Parents should keep a watch on their children,” she explained.
She said the city police as part of women safety initiatives were establishing one more Bharosa center in the old city and taking up many more activities in the coming year. “Also, we plan to start 13 counseling centers in the city and provide more bikes to the She teams members,” she said.
Share information on any disputes, citizens urged
Citizens should share any information about disputes arising between individuals, families or groups over property or women/girls, with the police.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said, “Most of the murders that took place during the year 2021 were due to extramarital affairs and property disputes between families or individuals. It is all a hush-hush and information does not come out easily unless someone who is knowhow of the things informs us.”
He said that crime of passion is a global phenomenon and as the activity is secret, it is difficult for the police to know unless something violent takes place. “If we are given information in time, there is a provision in CrPC and we will bind over the person for good conduct,” he said.
