Hyderabad: A string of recent sexual assault cases reported across the city has once again raised concerns and brought women’s safety into sharp focus. The incidents, reported over the past few weeks, involve women and minors from different backgrounds.
One of the most shocking cases involved a newly married woman who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by her husband and his friends after being forced to consume intoxicating substances. The allegations sparked outrage, prompting the National Commission for Women to seek a report from the Telangana government.
In another case, police arrested two men for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman after luring her with the promise of opportunities in the film industry.
A school principal was also booked after a former student accused him of sexually assaulting her several years ago. The complaint has led to a detailed investigation, with police recording statements and collecting evidence.
In a separate incident, a seven-year-old girl was rescued from an alleged sexual assault attempt in Borabanda after alert residents intervened and overpowered the accused before handing him over to the police.
Earlier, a woman police constable had accused a sub-inspector of sexually assaulting her on the pretext of marriage, leading to his arrest and departmental action.
The recent cases have reignited debate over the safety of women in homes, workplaces, educational institutions, and public spaces.
Meanwhile, social activists have urged authorities to ensure speedy investigation and trial of sexual offence cases, strengthen victim support mechanisms and intensify awareness campaigns against gender-based violence.
Hyderabad Police have been continuing initiatives such as She Teams, surveillance, and special patrols to curb crimes against women.
“In the last month, we have received nearly a hundred complaints, including stalking in person and online, threats, and sexual assault. We have noticed that unknown persons stood in first place in list of suspects, followed by people denied or rejected by women, and thirdly, former friends or lovers. All complaints were acted upon promptly,” said a senior official from the She Teams.
However, women’s rights groups say that along with effective policing, public awareness, timely prosecution and strict punishment of offenders are essential to create a safer environment for women and girls in the city.
