Hyderabad tanker bookings surge; 12,500 apartments depend on HMWSSB this year
Water tanker bookings in Hyderabad surged this year, with 12,500 apartments relying on the service compared to 4,000 last summer. HMWSSB MD K. Ashok Reddy said demand spiked even during rains, especially in areas like Uppal, L.B. Nagar, and Malkajgiri, due to delayed rainfall and drying borewells.

Hyderabad: Water tanker bookings through the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) had risen sharply this year, with nearly 12,500 apartments using the service compared with around 4,000 apartments during the summer of last year, according to HMWSSB managing director, K Ashok Reddy.
He said a high volume of tanker bookings was being recorded in certain areas even on days when it was raining.
On Saturday, he inaugurated three renovated recharge pits and a recharge system at Beverly Springs Apartments at Beverly Hills, Guttala Begumpet. The recharge system was created by converting a defunct borewell into an injection borewell. Later, he addressed an awareness programme held with apartment residents.
He said the water board maintained data on the daily water requirements of every apartment, building, and locality through the tanker booking system. By analysing the information, officials identify areas with the highest demand and deploy filling stations, tankers, and personnel accordingly.
He said tanker demand had been significantly high in areas such as Ayyappa Society, Kukatpally, S.R. Nagar, and Jubilee Hills, but there had been an unexpected spike in demand this June and July in Uppal, LB Nagar, NTR Nagar, and Malkajgiri. He attributed the trend to delayed rainfall, depleting groundwater levels, and borewells drying up.
He said apartment RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations) could significantly reduce their reliance on tankers by conducting water usage audits, curbing leakages, harvesting rainwater and converting defunct borewells into recharge pits.
