Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park (NZP), Hyderabad, has expanded its collection of exotic animals with the release of a pair of Serval Cats into the enclosure for public display here on Sunday. This new exotic species is endemic to the African continent and can live up to 16 years in captivity.
After releasing Serval Cats into the cats’ enclosure, Dr. C Suvarna, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF), launched the renovated Fossil Park Garden, featuring a variety of plant species planted in the model of Telangana map.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Suvarna said the Nehru Zoo Park is known for its rich animal collection in its open moated animal enclosures.
“With the addition of another new species of animal – Serval Cats, the zoo collection went up to 195 species in stock. The breeding programme in the zoo is remarkable, and almost all the animal species are successfully bred in captivity,” Dr. Suvarna said.
Earlier, Dr. Suvarna, along with PCCF (Wildlife) Elusing Meru, and Zoo Park Director Sunil S Hiremath, among other forest department officials, launched a mega plantation programme under the Vana Mahotsavam celebrations. They planted saplings of Ficus, fruit-bearing and shaded trees near the reptile house area in the zoo premises.
