Hyderabad: Gone are the days when kids would be happy playing in their homes. Advit Golechha, a four-year-old from Hyderabad, shows why they are different nowadays. Advit recently became the youngest Asian to trek to the base camp of Mount Everest. Accompanied by his mother, Shweta Golechha, and uncle Saurabh Sukhani, Advit started the climb on October 28 and scaled a height of 5,364 metres on November 6.
Shweta, who has been hiking and trekking for the last 10 years, said though young, Advit was determined to reach his destination. “For a young kid, Advit was very calm and acclimatised to the increasing air pressure pretty well. He did about 70 per cent of the trekking by himself. Several others who were climbing with us were amazed that a young kid could walk so much,” she said.
However, Advit did encounter some trouble towards the end. “During the last two days of the climb, Advit experienced acute mountain sickness. As the air pressure was very low due to high altitude, his body wasn’t accepting the food. He was also pretty confused about why his tummy felt weird all the time. But, he pushed through and made it to the camp. He was very delighted. Looking at his condition we decided to take a chopper instead of climbing down,” Shweta said.
Interestingly, Shweta had decided to take Advit to the Everest Base Camp even before he was born. “I started hiking about 10 years ago and really enjoyed it. When I was pregnant, I decided that Advit would be the youngest in the world to reach the Everest Base Camp. I started training him very early. We recently shifted to Dubai and there my flat is on the 15th floor. I and Advit climb the stairs rather than taking the lift. He is also used to walking a lot since a young age. While he couldn’t be the youngest person in the world due to the pandemic, I am so thrilled that he is the youngest Asian to achieve this feat,” she said. Thanking her husband, Gaurav, for supporting her through this journey, Shweta said Advit was doing fine now that he was back home.
