Hyderabad: There is good news for Hyderabad cricket. Bowling all-rounder Rishith Reddy has been picked by the National Junior selection committee as part of the 20-member Indian under-19 team that will take part in the Under-19 Asia Cup to be played in the UAE from December 23. The players will attend a preparatory camp in Bengaluru before taking part in the tournament.
On hearing the news, Hyderabad Cricket Association president Mohammed Azharuddin congratulated Rishith. ”Happy to hear that Rishith Reddy got selected for the Asia Cup under-19 team. Great news for Hyderabad. Congratulations and best wishes,’’ said Azharuddin in a tweet.
For Rishith Reddy it is a big breakthrough. “It will give me an opportunity to showcase my talent in a big tournament like the Asia Cup,’’ said the 18-year-old, who stays in Gachibowli.
This year, Rishith has been in good form, particularly with the ball, in the under-19 tournament. Standing over 6 feet, he captured 13 wickets in Hyderabad’s good run in the Vinoo Mankad one-day tournament where they reached the semifinals. His best haul was 6/34 against Goa. Impressed with his show, the Sharath-led Junior selection committee picked him for the quadrangular series in Kolkata as a replacement player which Bangladesh had in the tournament. He even captured 5/53 against Bangladesh in Kolkata. “I thought I was bowling very well this season and I have got into a good rhythm,’’ he said.
Rishith, who is also a hard-hitter of the ball, has been good with his inswingers. “I’m learning to bowl the out-swingers,’’ he said.
The young promising cricketer says he got into cricket after accompanying his father Sharath Reddy and uncle Niteesh Reddy, who play in the Corporate tournaments. “My father is a businessman but he takes time out to play Corporate cricket. He bowls left-arm seamer. I learnt a lot by watching him and has been a great inspiration for me. He has been instrumental in improving me as a bowler,’’ said Rishith.
A student of Oakridge School, Rishith showed early promise when he represented Hyderabad in the under-14 tournament. He bagged 14 wickets, including a five-wicket haul against Tamil Nadu. In the under-16 tournament, he scalped 15 wickets for Hyderabad in 2019. Rishith was initially in Fiaz Cricket Academy before shifting to Spotlight Academy.
