Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Monday blamed the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) for failing to carry out desilting work in drains, which it said led to flooding during the recent thundershowers in Hyderabad.

HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath, who visited multiple locations, including Jubilee Gardens in Kondapur, Shamshabad, Attapur and Ramdev Baba Nagar on Monday, maintained that the accumulation of silt in drains was the main reason for flooding during the recent thundershowers.

The visiting team of officials from HYDRAA said the drains were covered with slabs, making it impossible to carry out desilting work and thereby escalating the severity of the flooding.

Officials concerned told the HYDRAA Commissioner that if storm-water drains had access points, desilting could have been carried out effectively.

HYDRAA officials said that for the past several days, their ground staff had been involved in lifting slabs covering drains in the Jubilee Gardens area and carrying out extensive desilting.

The senior HYDRAA official directed DRF teams to remove slabs over drains wherever required so that desilting could be completed fully.

The HYDRAA officials pointed out that waterlogging at Kondapur’s Jubilee Gardens was contributing to flooding on roads in Shamshabad, Ramdev Baba Nagar and Attapur.

Ranganath urged the irrigation, municipal, revenue, police and traffic police departments to work jointly and coordinate with one another to avoid inconvenience to the public.
